Deadly Fire in East Boston Claims One Life, Sends Several to Hospital
A tragic fire in East Boston early Tuesday morning has left one person dead and several others hospitalized, according to the Boston Fire Department and Boston Police. The blaze, which engulfed a multi-family home on Meridian Street near West Eagle Street, quickly spread to neighboring buildings, causing extensive damage and forcing residents to flee for their lives.

Fire Engulfs Multi-Family Home, Spreads to Adjacent Buildings
The fire, which began around 5 a.m., was first spotted by residents who were awakened by the sound of shattering glass and people screaming. Heavy flames were seen shooting out of a second-floor window of the multi-family home on Meridian Street. The close proximity of the houses in the neighborhood allowed the fire to quickly spread to an adjacent building and a structure in the back.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the building heavily engulfed in flames. They immediately began battling the blaze, but the intensity of the fire forced them to evacuate the burning structures at one point. They continued to fight the fire from nearby houses, attempting to contain the spread of the flames.
Residents of the affected buildings were forced to flee their homes in a panic. One resident recounted, “My wife jumped out of bed, and I heard what sounded like glass shattering somewhere. She looked out the window and saw people running around screaming. Then our second-floor neighbor came knocking and said ‘there’s a fire, there’s a fire!'”
One Dead, Several Injured in East Boston Blaze
Boston Police reported that one person was found dead at the scene, prompting homicide detectives to be called in. “Either four or five” people were transported to the hospital, with at least one individual sustaining life-threatening injuries, according to a police spokesperson.
In total, six individuals, including a child, were taken to area hospitals, as confirmed by Boston EMS. An additional person succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital, according to Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke. One firefighter also suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized.
The police spokesperson stated that the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire would be lengthy. No further details have been released regarding the victims or the extent of the damage to the affected buildings.
Neighborhood Engulfed in Smoke, Area Cordoned Off
As firefighters battled the blaze, heavy smoke billowed through the East Boston neighborhood. The area was cordoned off for several blocks in all directions, and the smoke could be smelled as far away as downtown Boston.
