Officer Ambushed During Traffic Stop

The officer, whose name has not been released, was conducting a traffic stop when a person inside the car opened fire, striking the officer. The officer returned fire, mortally wounding the suspect. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The officer is currently conscious, alert, and being treated at Albany Medical Center. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to their injuries.

Mayor Condemns "Depraved Gun Violence"

Mayor Kathy Sheehan, who reviewed the officer’s body camera footage with Chief Hawkins, stated, “It is clear the officer was ambushed in an act of depraved gun violence. My thoughts are with the officer as he is being treated by the medical professionals at Albany Medical Center, as well as his family and the entire Albany Police Department.”

Sheehan emphasized that no one, especially a public servant performing their duty, should have to endure the trauma of such an incident. She pledged to do everything possible to ensure the officer’s speedy recovery and support those around him.

The mayor’s office and the Albany Police Department are working together to provide the necessary support to the injured officer and his family during this difficult time. Counseling services will be made available to the officer and his colleagues to help them cope with the emotional impact of the shooting.
